We know how hard it can be to buy gifts for writers, so we’ve gone ahead and asked our favourite writers, publishers and writers' organisations what they want for Christmas.
Every two hours today, we’ve been sharing the wish lists we’ve gathered. To wrap up this huge day, we're joined by Daniel Young, founding editor of Tincture, and his little list of Christmas desires. We're also stoked to have a copy of Tincture to give away!
All the novellas! Melville house have published a matching set of (so far) 56 novellas under a series called 'The Art of the Novella'. The set includes my all-time favourite The Awakening by Kate Chopin and other titles from writers such as Chekhov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf, Cervantes, Proust, Balzac, Edith Wharton and more. They recently had a special allowing you to order all 56 for just $312. It's a lot to ask and I have no space or time to read any of them, but still: I WANT THEM ALL!
Sonic Youth, Sensational Fix. My two favourite things combined: the music of Sonic Youth and a book. Not just any book, but a comprehensive 784-page volume that includes new music, artwork, poems, interviews and articles from the band, including things they've written about Allen Ginsberg, Kurt Cobain, Patti Smith, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and more. OK this is a niche gift, meant only for Sonic Youth fans, but it really brings together the various New York musical, art, fashion and literary scenes that the band has been a part of since 1981.
Subscriptions to literary journals. My local picks would be The Canary Press, Overland and Kill Your Darlings, but there are so many more and there's something for everybody out there. My international picks are The Paris Review for its unfailing wonderfulness and Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope: All-Story for its always striking combination of guest-designed artwork, interesting new fiction and republication of classic stories that have inspired films. (Recent examples include the stories that inspired Rear Window, Total Recall, Palo Alto, Old Joy, The Birds and Blade-Runner.)
Thanks to Tincture, Writers Bloc have a copy of the latest issue to give away. Share this post on Twitter, remembering to tag @writers_bloc, to go into the draw to win!
