is do not reference Chuck Palahniuk?
Perhaps the best advice I’ve been given on writing is to read more. Read the classics, read popular paperbacks, grab the first time novelist or one of the cast of characters you’ll often see at your local bookshop. Because, it will teach you something about writing.
But often I find it’s easy to get caught up in the daily dross and forget about the important things in life: exercise, reading, eating.
Now, we here at Writers Bloc aren’t going to get you on a treadmill or help you figure out what to do with all that kale in the kitchen but we are setting up two opportunities for you to take part in one of the most enriching things you can do. Read.
The first book club were are offering is called Cult Classics. Each month, we will feature a book that has been critically and contiunally successful. We’ll pick the kind of books people have loved for years and look at what makes them great. The first book we’ll start with is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
The second series in the book club will be called Bright Young Things and focus on writers just starting out. What better way to learn about what’s working in publishing than by reading work from first time novelists and early career writers. M.R. Carey’s The Girl with All the Gifts will be our first BYT.
Sound like something you’d be interested in? Each of our Book Clubs will meet at the large table in the bar at Palace Verona Cinema at 17 Oxford Street, Paddington. They have a well stocked wine selection, choice of cake or you can just get yourself a large popcorn. It’s pretty good. If you’re unable to make it, we’ll be using the hashtag #blocclub as well as keeping the discussion going on our forum.
Each month, we will vary the books to include a wide spectrum of writers and genres and would love to have suggestions from you.
Sign up to our Meetup page for this and more events in Sydney. If you’re interested in similar events in your home town, let us know and we can help set it up.
Geoff Orton is a teacher who should read more.
