Summary:
VERBATIM VOYEUR “Go to an environment where you are able to overhear an actual conversation. Listen, record and observe the conversation intently then ‘transcribe’ the conversation as accurately and minutely as possible. Use the conversation you have ‘caught’ to write a 2-3 page script. You must capture the unique dialogue patterns and voices of the participants as well as the environment and tone of the conversation.” A short three page script I wrote for the Verbatim Voyeur Exercise in my Storytelling Workshop unit, based a conversation I observed at a party.

INT. HOUSE PARTY - NIGHT.

A 90's Party playlist blares, and drunk girls joyfully sing along to the Spice Girls. ADAM awkwardly holds a drink, and picks up an orange jelly baby from the food table. ANNIE stares at him out of the corner of her eye. He slowly takes a bite out of it, then rolls his tongue around. Adam flicks the jelly baby onto the floor, Annie turns to face him from her seat.

ANNIE
Are you gonna pick that up?

Adam sways, turning toward her. He smiles cheekily.

ANNIE
(cont'd) Pick it up!

Adam
(GROANS)

He leans over slowly and picks the jelly baby up, then haphazardly chucks it towards the bin, but it misses and slides further under the table.

ADAM
Oh.

ANNIE
(SIGHS) Ugh.

JESSIE walks up to the two of them, holding a drink and smiling. Annie makes eye contact with her, then looks at Adam displeased. Jessie snorts under her breath. Adam's eyes glassily look towards an attractive girl who has entered the party, behind Jessie.

JESSIE
Yo.

ADAM
I'm still pissed off at Charlie and Laura for screwing up my chance with Bec.

ANNIE
What were you going to do, like seriously?

ADAM
(SOFTLY) I donno.

ANNIE
Kiss her in front of everyone? She wouldn't have let you do that.

ADAM
I know but like I have to experience the rejection. She's my ghost of Banquo.

ANNIE
Oh my god.

JESSIE
(GIGGLE) What the fuck did you just say?

ADAM
(DRAMATICALLY) Avaunt! And quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee! Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold.. thy blood is.... (MUMBLES THE REST OF THE VERSE)

JESSIE
Nice, very nice Adam.

ANNIE
What!?

ADAM
Such a pleb.

JESSIE
Romeo and Juliet right?

Jessie then glances knowingly at Annie, who has started playing on her phone. Adam takes a large swig out of his red cup of alcohol, building up to a large sigh.

ADAM
How am I even friends with you guys, how?

ANNIE
(UNDER BREATH) I think I should be the one asking that.

JESSIE
Well excuse me, I don't know all the Shakespeares!

ADAM
The Shakespeares!?

JESSIE
I was JUST joking Adam! I know it's Hamlet (SNORTS)

Adam puts up the finger, and stares at her with disbelief. His nose twitches and then points his finger at Annie, who is paying no attention to the conversation.

ADAM
Annie farted!

ANNIE
(LOOKS UP FROM PHONE) Whats what?

JESSIE
Adam, I can't even smell anything.

ANNIE
(DISGUSTED) Excuse me Adam.

Jessie glances around, and sees RYAN, a large burly man, sitting next to Annie; he is currently eating pizza. She points to him, and looks at Adam.

JESSIE
(Whisper) Him?

Adam turns his head, his whole body swaying as he does, and looks at Ryan, then glances back at Annie, who is looking at him unimpressed.

ADAM
I have to get another drink, and get away from you disgusting plebs.

Adam takes a large stride and stumbles out of the circle. Jessie smirks then sits next to Annie, who looks up at her with a small smile.

ANNIE
(WHISPER TO JESSIE) I did actually fart.

Ryan turns to face them both, he still holds pizza in his hands, and chews contemplatively.

RYAN
Am I always that annoying when I'm drunk?
